Guide Standards
CTONZ members tour guides are required to meet standards as decided on
by the CTONZ.
As a base qualification CTONZ member guides should have either ATTTO or
SFRITO qualification and must have Cycle 1 bike mechanic competency and
first aid qualifications as per below.
Minimum first aid qualification requirements for guides employed by CTONZ
members.
Mountain Bike Tours
- For all mountain bike tours at least one guide must
have an Outdoor First Aid qualification, regardless of what trails they
are guiding.
NZQA
- Outdoor First Aid Standards
- it is recommended that lead guides have a PHEC (pre hospital emergency
care) qualification (NZQA 25411, NZQA 25412, NZQA 14473 unit standards).
- all other guides must have a minimum
of 'Work Place First Aid' regardless of what trails they are guiding (NZQA
26551, NZQ
26552 unit standards).
- Mountain Bike Guides should have NZQA unit standards 26246 & 26428
- Unit Standard – 26426 - Demonstrate Mountain Biking Knowledge
& Skills
- Unit Standard – 26428 - Lead a Mountain Biking Experience
for a Group
Road & Cycle Trail Tours
- On a guided tour all guides must
have a minimum of 'Work Place First Aid' or equivalent (NZQA
26551, NZQ
26552 unit standards).
- Where customers and guides are more than one hour from external emergency
services or have no operational communications (radio, cell or sat phone
service), at least one guide must
have an outdoor first-aid qualification NZQA

- Where customers and guides are more than one hour from external emergency
services or have no operational communications (radio, cell or sat phone
service) it is recommended that lead guides have a PHEC (pre hospital

Cycle Tour Guide mechanic skills - On a guided tour, the lead tour guide
must be Cycle 1 qualified, it is recommended
that they should be Cycle 2 qualified.
Note - Cycle 1 & 2 are internal standards as created
by CTONZ.
Cycle 1
Core Focus; Cycle safety & set-up
Competencies.
- Identify and name key cycle components
- Fit a client to a bike – will cover helmet fitting, pedals, seat
height, reach and stem adjustment.
- Fit & secure wheels, - will cover setting brakes, skewer tension.
- Ensure bike is roadworthy (will occur at the start of a ride and also
as a check after any accident ) - will cover visual checks, rattles etc.
- Repair a puncture – involves primarily changing a tube and/or
tyre, and mending the puncture.
- Lubing a chain – how much
- Adjusting brakes
- Replacing brake pads. - V and calliper brakes
- Guides must have a current first aid certificate
- As a base qualification CTONZ member guides must have either ATTTO or

Cycle 2
Core Focus; Diagnostic & repairs on tour
Competencies
- True wheel to make rideable.
- Replace derailleur (or straighten to make rideable )
- Adjust gears (dealing primarily with cable stretch.)
- Replace a basic cable.
- Bearing adjustment
- Adjust a head set
- Rejoin / repair a chain
- Replace / secure a broken spoke.
- Replacing brake pads – disc brakes.
